Enlarged Prostate
As long as things are running well in our body, we rarely ever recognize the smaller parts. One of these parts is the prostate gland, a small walnut shaped gland that encompasses the urethra that runs between the bladder and the penis. Although this gland has a small function in the body, it can certainly cause a lot of big problems for us if it is not running properly. Its main function is to create part of the semen that is used by the male during ejaculation. If you have an enlarged prostate, however, this gland goes from having a small purpose to being a very large problem.
Typically, we don't have any problem with this part of our body until we get older. As a matter of fact, it is not usually recommended that you have a routine prostate exam until you hit the age of 50. Even though the older generation tends to experience some problems with their prostate, they can certainly happen at any age in life. It is just that the prostate begins to naturally enlarge after the age of 50 and this is not associated with any kind of problem.
An enlarged prostate will create a lot of difference symptoms in a male. Most of the symptoms are related to urination and problems that we may be experienced when trying to evacuating our bladder. This is because whenever you're experiencing an enlarged prostate, it will cut off the flow to a certain extent that is coming from the bladder. This will cause us to have a difficulty in urinating, slow urination and dribbling that occurs after you are finished urinating. You may also have to get up frequently during the night in order to empty your bladder. All of these can be symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
In order to tell if you have an enlarged prostate or not you are going to need to go in for a prostate exam. This is a relatively routine procedure but it is not one that is pleasant or looked forward to by most men. The doctor will insert a finger into your anus in order to feel the prostate from the inside. Since they do this on a regular basis, they will be able to tell if there is a problem with enlargement or if there are any nodules present which may pose a risk.
Just because you have an enlarged prostate does not necessarily mean that it is terminal. There is a possibility that you could have prostate cancer as this does happen to one out of every six men on the average. It is also possible that it is prostatitis and the condition can be treated with some simple antibiotics. Regardless of why you have the enlarged prostate, it is important that you go in for routine checkups to make sure that you do not develop a serious condition. Catching these in advance is the best way to make sure that it does not progress any further.
